Table of Contents

Last week, we received the Marine Labor Convention certification (MLC2006) after an extensive selection and examination process. This certification, given by the Lloyd’s Maritime Institute, aims to ensure that all the maritime workforce has access to decent working conditions.

MLC2006: What is it and why is it important?

The “MLC, 2006” Convention, which was implemented on August 20, 2013, officially became a part of international law, setting basic standards for the work and living conditions of all seafarers aboard ships. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in promoting fair competition and establishing an equitable environment. This, for reputable shipowners under the flags of countries that have ratified the convention.

Why should you work with a recruitment company holding a MLC 2006 certification?

Working with a recruitment company that holds an MLC2006 certification offers several advantages for decision-makers in the marine industry. Here are some reasons why it’s beneficial:

  • Quality Assurance

MLC2006 certification is a testament to the recruitment companyโ€™s commitment to quality and ethical practices. It means that the company has been audited and meets the requirements for the protection of seafarersโ€™ rights, ensuring that they are recruited and placed in jobs without being exploited.

  • Compliance with International Standards

The MLC2006 (Maritime Labour Convention, 2006) sets global standards for the employment and living conditions of seafarers. By choosing a certified recruitment company, you ensure that your employment practices align with these international norms, promoting a safe and fair working environment.

  • Risk Mitigation

Working with a certified company reduces legal and reputational risks associated with non-compliance with international labor standards. It ensures that seafarers are employed under contracts that are fair and legally sound, reducing the likelihood of disputes and penalties.

  • Attracting Talent

Seafarers are more likely to trust and want to work for employers who prioritize their welfare and rights. A recruitment company with MLC2006 certification can attract a higher caliber of candidates, providing you with a skilled and motivated workforce.

  • Global Mobility

MLC2006 certification is recognized worldwide. Working with a certified recruitment company facilitates the hiring of seafarers from different countries, ensuring compliance across various jurisdictions and simplifying the process of international recruitment.

The bottom line

Overall, MLC 2006 creates a foundation for fair, safe, and decent working conditions aboard ships. This benefitis the maritime industry by promoting equality, safety, and operational excellence. Compliance with such standards is crucial for fostering a sustainable and responsible maritime sector.
