As you are reading this, Kenya has 73% of its installed power generation capacity coming from renewable energy sources, whilst 90 percent of electricity used in the East African country is generated by green energy sources such as geothermal, wind, solar and hydroelectric. A greatly promising industry that has grown in the last ten years making the country lead the way in the African continent. But, how did Kenya get here and what lesson can we take from it?
A fast transition.
Back in 2013, only 23% of Kenyan households had electricity. In 2020, that number rose to 80%, to the surprise of many. Geothermal, wind, solar and hydro-electric installations have aided in the increased electrification of the country. Due to the strong solar output, coastal breezes and the geology in specific locations of Kenya, there is potential for the production of renewable energy. As a result, foreign investment flows seamlessly.
The great coverage of green energy is also accredited to the affordability of the service and the interest from the government to drift away from traditional energy sources. This is proofed by the active support of development, installation and research of renewable types of energy through governmental programmes. Companies within this industry also enjoy a favourable taxation regime and various other incentives.
Still, not everything is perfect.
A widely present issue is the lack of local talent. Therefore, companies rely on a small pool of options who often demand high salaries due to limited supply and high demand. Hiring expatriates is even more expensive and filled with relocation procedures. WTS Energy sees how said gap emphasises the importance of empowering young local Kenyans into taking on roles in this industry. That is why, together with GIZ Kenya, WTS is set to open a training centre to form the future leaders of the Energy Transition industry in the country.
