Maintenance Technicians – Substation (Kajiado, Kenya)

We are seeking two Maintenance Technicians on behalf of our client to support maintenance activities at their substation in Kajiado, Kenya. The technicians will be responsible for servicing and maintaining wind turbine fleets, collector networks, auxiliaries, switchgears, transformers, circuit breakers, power switches, plant inventories, and other critical equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental policies, ensuring compliance with work permits and lockout systems before starting work, and proper permit close-out after completion.
  • Act swiftly to make on-the-spot repairs and installations when systems and machinery break down and troubleshoot causes of failure.
  • Interpret technical instructions, drawings, diagrams, and process flow charts to diagnose and troubleshoot faults.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and logs.
  • Operate various standard power tools and equipment to execute repairs and installations.
  • Define, prepare, and manage work orders, securing spare parts for timely job completion.
  • Perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of power generation systems, assess potential issues, and recommend necessary interventions.
  • Test new and existing electrical systems, equipment, and machinery to identify potential problems.
  • Prepare and submit maintenance reports (weekly, monthly, and annual) in consultation with maintenance engineers.
  • Support in scoping and defining engineering projects, including developing plans, drawings, and layouts.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced personnel.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration and sharing best practices within the team and across business units.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical Power Systems, Control & Instrumentation, or Electro-Mechanical/Mechatronics from a recognized institution.
  • 4–5 years’ hands-on experience as a technician servicing voltage switchgear, power transformers, and underground cables in a substation environment.
  • Medium to high voltage experience (33/220 kV) is a must.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Switching certification by KPLC and a basic understanding of Kenya’s power system grid layout will be an added advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of Distribution Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Control (PLC), and SCADA Systems.
