Table of Contents

As global career opportunities expand, professionals are increasingly moving across continents to advance their careers. In this article, we meet two inspiring women, Matilda and Dorothy, who have both relocated from Kenya to the Netherlands to take on roles as High Voltage (HV) Cable Jointers. They share their experiences and insights on the challenges and opportunities of relocating to a new country, adapting to a different work environment, and the impact of such a significant career move on their professional growth.

When and how did the opportunity to relocate to the Netherlands arise?

Matilda

The opportunity to relocate to the Netherlands came in May, 2023. I was participating in a training program with WTS Energy that provided both training for trainees and job placements upon completion. After going through the interview process, I was fortunate to receive a job offer. I had always wanted to work abroad, and this opportunity gave me the perfect chance to explore Europe while advancing my career.

Dorothy

My relocation opportunity arose in May 2023 while I was actively job hunting. I found a job advertisement on LinkedIn and applied. I was particularly interested in international opportunities in the energy sector, and when this position in the Netherlands became available, I went for it. The process included several interviews and a thorough evaluation of my skills and experience.

How did you prepare for the relocation, both personally and professionally?

Matilda

I prepared by conducting extensive research on life in the Netherlands, watching YouTube videos, and reading articles about Dutch culture. I also started learning basic Dutch using the Duolingo app. Professionally, I made sure my certifications were up to date and researched the projects I would be working on.

Dorothy

Before my relocating to the Netherlands, I did intensive research on this country, including its culture, language, and lifestyle. I also started learning basic Dutch with Duolingo to help me interact with the locals. Professionally, I familiarized myself with new technologies and trends in the energy sector to align with Dutch standards.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during your relocation process, and how did you solve them?

Matilda

Navigating the visa process and managing financial transactions in a new currency were my biggest challenges. WTS Energy helped with the visa, and I sought advice from others who had relocated before. I also enrolled in a local language class to overcome the language barrier.

Dorothy

Finding an apartment was a significant challenge due to the competitive housing market. Thankfully, WTS Energy arranged both temporary and permanent housing for me. The visa and work permit process were also complex, but WTS Energy managed all the paperwork and even provided a city tour to help me adjust.

What are the main cultural and work-environment differences you noticed when you first arrived?

Matilda

The Dutch are very direct and value punctuality, which took some getting used to. The work culture here is more relaxed, with a strong emphasis on work-life balance. The offices are less hierarchical, and everyone is encouraged to share their opinions.

Dorothy

Work hours are shorter, and there is a strong emphasis on personal time. I found the direct communication style different from what I was used to, but I now appreciate the clarity it brings. The openness and ability to voice concerns without fear of victimization are also refreshing.

What insights and experiences have you gained from working in the energy sector in the Netherlands, and how do you think these could be applied to Kenya?

Matilda

I’ve gained valuable insights into innovation and sustainability, particularly in renewable energy. The focus on safety and collaboration is something I’d like to see more of in Kenya. Implementing these practices could drive innovation and productivity back home.

Dorothy

The Netherlands is a leader in renewable energy, and I’ve worked with cutting-edge technologies that could benefit Kenya. Promoting renewable energy projects and sustainable practices in Kenya could make a significant impact. The balanced work environment here could also enhance efficiency in Kenyan workplaces.

How do you balance your work and personal life in a new country? What are some activities or hobbies you’ve picked up since moving to the Netherlands?

Matilda

I’ve taken up cycling, which is a popular way to explore the city. On weekends, I enjoy visiting parks and taking short trips to nearby cities. I’ve also joined a social club to meet new people.

Dorothy

The Dutch emphasis on work-life balance has made it easier to manage my time. I’ve taken up cycling to explore the countryside and go to the gym regularly. These activities have helped me stay active and adjust to life in the Netherlands.

Matilda

Relocating has made me more independent and adaptable. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures and broadened my perspective on the energy sector. My network has expanded, giving me insights into global energy trends and practices.

Dorothy

This experience has enhanced my cultural awareness and adaptability. I have become more resilient and eager to embrace new challenges. Professionally, I’ve gained knowledge and skills in the energy sector, and building an international network has been incredibly valuable.
