We asked our consultants: ‘What is the one valuable lesson you learned from your parents?’

How can parents influence their kids work styles or values once they grow up?

According to parents.app, parenting can influence a child’s development in 5 ways: physical development, emotional development, social development, cognitive development and behavioural development. In the case of behavioural development, youngsters often emulate the actions they witness in their family. Parental influence manifests itself in language, attitudes towards others, taking responsibility for mistakes, and attitudes towards learning and discipline. As such, parents need to be aware of the atmosphere they foster at home.

Parenting practices can be reflected in the ways your respond to authority and influences your own preferred leadership style, this according to Rachelle Focardi, Expert on Generational Diversity and Multi-Generational Workforce. Research has also found a link between parenting styles and workplace behaviours.

In this article, we asked our consultants to share valuable lessons from their parents. These lessons continue to guide their personal and professional lives today. And these are what they have learned.

What our consultants say:

Firstly, Zein shared an important lesson about perseverance taught by his father, a military veteran. During their daily rides, his father’s advice on commitment and hard work profoundly shaped Zein’s personal and professional life.

Zein A.

Public Relations Officer, UAE

One valuable lesson from my parents, particularly my father, a military veteran, is the importance of perseverance. Every day, I had the privilege of picking him up from work, and during our drives home, he would share invaluable pieces of advice. His dedication and wisdom have deeply influenced me. Staying committed and working hard, even through challenges, leads to success. This leads to personal growth. This lesson has been a cornerstone in both my personal and professional life.

Then, Ian discussed a profound lesson from his childhood, taught by his parents, that continues to influence his interactions both personally and professionally. He explained that mastering active listening, a skill his parents emphasized, has shaped his career communication and collaboration.

Ian N.

Control Room Operator, Kenya

One invaluable skill I learned from my parents is the art of active listening. They instilled in me the importance of truly hearing others’ perspectives before forming my own conclusions. This skill has become a cornerstone of my approach in the workplace, allowing me to engage authentically with colleagues and clients, by attentively listening to their ideas. This not only enhances teamwork but also enriches problem-solving processes. My parents’ emphasis on listening has proven to be a powerful tool, enabling me to build stronger relationships and achieve shared goals in my professional endeavors.

The most valuable lesson I learned from my parents is to live well below your means.

As we reflect on our parents’ lessons, it’s clear their wisdom shapes our lives. This includes both personal and professional aspects. Let’s continue to appreciate and apply these teachings, recognizing the fundamental role they play in our development and success. Their knowledge is a timeless gift that guides us through life’s challenges.
